Resilience is women’s greatest strength. It’s true a historic, aggregate level as we fought quietly and then loudly for the right to be heard and to be valued. It’s true for the individual too, as we continuously face trials unique to the female: from harassment to disrespect to infertility to miscarriage to having kids and not losing one’s self as a result. Like the resilient aspen, first to come back after a fire, we are able to rise and rise again, resolutely thriving in the face of hardship, spreading our roots strong and deep to occupy our deserved place.

This large-scale oil painting is a part of Good Bones, a series which seeks to see and appreciate the overlooked. This particular piece depicts the parietal bone, which makes up the very top of the skull. Simple and stoic, it steadfastly protects the very zenith of our bodies.

Using inspiration from both the form and function of human anatomy, the Good Bones series explores the profound beauty and intricate stories concealed within us. With this series, I strive to showcase the benefits of probing beneath the surface. While each individual bone has its own captivating narrative, taken as a whole, they create an everlasting symbol for the deepest, most fundamental part of a thing. They serve as a reminder to strip away the extraneous fluff when interacting with the world. Before we react, before we judge, and before we hate, take the time to recognize and appreciate the good bones beneath.

This occipital bone painting is a large and striking addition to my Good Bones series, which unearths the stories hidden within ourselves. The key structure of this bone is the large passage called the foramen magnum. Through this hole comes the spinal cord, being carefully guided home to the base of the brain.

This painting of the magnificent sphenoid bone is a part of my Good Bones series, which focuses on appreciating what is beneath the surface. The sphenoid lives at the base of the cranium. Deceptively delicate-looking, the sphenoid is actually integral to the support of several critical structures: the eye orbit, the pituitary gland, and the brain itself. The beauty of this bone was the first inspiration for the entire series.

The temporal bone, located on the side of the skull, is part of the Good Bones series, which seeks to strip away the fluff to highlight all kinds of hidden beauty. I was inspired to paint it from an inside view to showcase the juxtaposition of the smooth, shell-like “squamous portion” with a rough outcropping called the “Petrous Portion”. Aptly named, as petrous means rocky, this rather unsightly crag humbly houses the fragile organs of the inner ear.

This painting depicts the lacrimal bone, which resides on the medial side of the eye orbit. Many of the tiny folds and structures on this bone are important in the process of tear production. This painting is part of my bone series, which seeks to explore the stories hidden in the terrain of the human bones.

This is a striking painting of the mandible bone. It is painted at an angle specifically designed to highlight several small but important anatomical structures. Yet I also placed it on its side to allow this somewhat jarring bone to be at rest. It is a part of my Bone series.

Each portrays a transverse slice; an unusual viewpoint that manages to elegantly showcase many organs from multiple body systems. Conversely, other vantage points convey an anatomical chaos that belies the delicate equilibrium painstakingly maintained by these systems. Unearthing this beauty and synergy sometimes just requires a shift in perspective.

Man has defined many meaningful ‘triangles’ within human anatomy: windows, so to speak, to the body that expose important, vital structures. They hold particular clinical significance, as they provide clues to physicians about what is actually happening in the body. I see echoes of such windows within the human personality: subtle moments when with a shift in tone, a change in eye contact, or perhaps with a vulnerability shared, we convey our true self, rather than the layers of faux personality cultivated to keep safe the vulnerable soul.

These paintings study the shapes created by individual human teeth. I was inspired by how the terrain and negative space in each are reminiscent of nature. In a simple cross section I see bottomless lakes, harsh valleys, regal mountains. That the majesty of nature can be echoed in this tiny, plain, functional thing is exhilarating.

This painting is an abstract depiction of eye anatomy. My inspiration stems from the many circular and elliptical shapes found in the layers of the eye, from the outside sclera, to the inner lens and retina. In studying this anatomy, I was enchanted by the small variances among the orbs. Initially there is an innate desire for each circle to match its predecessor more concretely, to see a ripple of perfect circles. When they instead vary in shape, size and continuity, a frisson of aesthetic tension develops, made only more exciting by the realization that these visual mishaps are what spawn vision itself.
